What happens in The Writing Nook? 

The Writing Nook is a 3-month-long creative writing and reading community that helps you finally write and read more fiction, meet new like-minded literary pals, develop your writing projects and make creativity a part of your everyday life.

. Open to everyone from newbies to seasoned writers and prolific bookworms, we’ll keep it small and close-knit with a maximum of 10 community members.

For 3 months, you’ll get access to 3 weekly group Zoom sessions (Tuesdays 7-8 am and 7-8 pm and Thursdays 7-8 pm). 

The sessions will include:

WRITING SPRINTS

Word Factory

Make real progress on your short stories, poems or novel draft with our dedicated writing sessions. Have a chat about your project, set your intentions for the writing time and get group accountability to get the words down.

When: Twice weekly

READ ALONGS

Gather & Read

Finally make time to enjoy reading fiction again and bring along our book club reads to regular read-along sessions. Sink into great stories and learn how to annotate and read through a writer’s lens.

When: Twice monthly

GUIDED CREATIVE JOURNALING

Quill & Think

Do some personal writing on your ambitions and challenges and overcome blocks with a mix of guided creative journaling, writing exercises, goal setting and project planning. Reflect and get the creative juices flowing.

BOOK CLUB

Book Nook

Come together with our group of curious creative writers and readers to discuss the latest assigned book club read. We’ll cover 3 books in total and you’ll get book club questions to ponder beforehand.

What’s included in The Writing Nook:

✍️ Welcome session – Get a relaxed introduction to The Writing Nook and the other writers in the community.

✍️ Twice weekly Word Factory sessions – Gather for a quick chat and set intentions for the writing session. Followed by 50 minutes of uninterrupted writing with atmospheric background music.

✍️ Twice monthly Gather & Read sessions – Come along with a soothing hot drink, snacks and your copy of our monthly book club read. We’ll have a quick chat and then spend 50 minutes reading without distractions.

✍️ Monthly Book Nook sessions – Share your thoughts on our latest read with the rest of the group, following the book club questions shared with you in advance. Across our 3 months together, we’ll read and discuss Five Tuesdays in Winter by Lily King, Sula by Toni Morrison and Fresh Water for Flowers by Valérie Perrin.

✍️ Monthly Quill & Think session – Reflect and get creative in our guided personal writing sessions. We’ll have a mix of reflective journaling on your writing ambitions and challenges, creative writing exercises, goal setting and project planning. Sharing is completely optional.

✍️ Regular community emails – Get exclusive resources, writing tips, prompts and exercises, reading recommendations and book club questions.

✍️ Private Instagram group chatGet reminders and updates from me and connect, share and chat with the other community members.

✍️ Final month Open Mic – Have a chance to read out a piece of your writing, listen to others and give/receive feedback from the rest of the group. Sharing your own writing is completely optional. (If you’d like to share but you don’t like public speaking, I’m happy to read out your work for you.)

ABOUT THE HOST

Hiya! I’m Sophie Campbell, your new writing best pal 

I’m a lifelong fiction writer and prize-winning poet with two creative writing degrees. I’ve had writing published by The Woolf, Surely Mag, WhyNot, Speculative Books, Bright Flash Literary Review, Razur Cuts (including their Finest Cuts edition) and others. 

I’m always drafting a new short story, scribbling poems or mapping out a new novel idea. In short, I’m word daft!  

I’m a big believer in the power words have to bring you real joy and fulfilment. There’s not much better than devouring a book you’re obsessed with or writing something you’re excited about. And once you catch the bug, it becomes addictive in the best way. 

But spending regular, quality time on writing and reading can be tough. When your life is so busy, it’s easy to let the habit slip – even though it’s so bloody good for you.

I get it and I know how to help you:

 The Writing Nook FAQs

  • No – beginners are welcome! There are no entry requirements to The Writing Nook. If you want to explore writing short stories, poetry or even a novel for the first time or the tenth time, this is the place for you. There are plenty of writers – including best-selling household names – who have no formal training in writing. But that doesn’t mean they don’t have a passion and creative instinct for it. Whether you’ve always dabbled in writing, you used to write but stopped or you’ve barely done it before but always wanted to, join us!

  • The Writing Nook will start on September 9th and finish on November 28th. (But we will have one final session, the Open Mic, on Tuesday, December 3rd.)

    When you sign up, you'll receive the calendar invites to all of our calls.

  • All the calls will take place on Zoom. The opening welcome session will be on Monday 9th of September at 7 pm. And every week, we’ll have two Word Factory sessions on Tuesdays (7 am and 7 pm) followed by a Quill & Think, Gather & Read or Book Nook session on Thursdays at 7 pm. At the end of the programme, we’ll have an Open Mic session on Tuesday 3rd of December at 7 pm.

  • The monthly book club and journaling sessions will be recorded and shared with you to play back at any time. But the Word Factory and Gather & Read calls won’t be recorded.

  • No! Sharing your writing is like baring a little piece of your soul and I’ll never pressure you to read your work aloud to the group. There will be an opportunity during the Open Mic final session for you to read out your writing, listen to others and give/receive feedback. But this will be completely voluntary. And if you like, I can read out your writing on your behalf.

  • The Writing Nook is a fiction writing and reading community where you’ll have dedicated time to develop your writing, participate in book club sessions and connect with other writers and readers. But this is not a fiction writing course. You won’t receive lessons on writing or be given homework. This is a space to discover – or rediscover – the joy of writing fiction and be held accountable to writing and reading more and more often with a group of lovely people who want to do the same.

  • While this programme is geared more towards fiction, there’s no reason why you can’t use our sessions to work on your nonfiction writing. If you’re open to trying out some fiction writing now and then, great!

  • If you upgrade, you’ll receive a Writing & Reading Kit with a notebook, stationery and copies of all three books we’ll be reading for our book club, Book Nook. You’ll also receive written feedback on up to 10,000 words of your own work and a 1:1 call with me to review the feedback and discuss your writing.

  • That’s absolutely fine! The monthly Book Nook and Quill & Think sessions will be recorded for you to watch in your own time. And there will be three different sessions per week to give you flexibility.

  • In Book Nook, our monthly book club, we’ll read and discuss Five Tuesdays in Winter by Lily King, Sula by Toni Morrison and Fresh Water for Flowers by Valérie Perrin.

  • On the standard membership, no. But if you upgrade to The Cosy Writing Nook, you'll receive copies of all 3 books we'll be reading in our monthly book club sessions along with other goodies, feedback on your writing and a 1:1 call.

  • Absolutely! The times listed are UK time so make sure you can attend the sessions based on your time zone.

  • The Writing Nook is a considered purchase so please make sure you have read everything on this page in detail to make sure this is the community for you before signing up.

    But if you decide The Writing Nook isn’t for you after you've signed u, you can cancel at any time. If you paid the total fee upfront, you’ll be partially refunded based on how many sessions you have already attended or had access to through recordings. If you're spreading the cost, your payments will be stopped.
